If someone in your family needs treatment in Dhaka, the hospital is only half the problem. The other half is where everyone sleeps, eats, and waits during the days or weeks the treatment takes. People travel to Dhaka from all over Bangladesh for surgery, cancer care, cardiac procedures, and specialist consultations, and most of them are figuring out accommodation on top of everything else they are already dealing with.

This guide covers what actually matters when you book a place for a medical stay: how close to be, what to look for, and how to keep the cost sane when the stay runs longer than you planned.

Why a hotel is not always the right answer

Hotels work fine for a two-day consultation. They stop working when the stay stretches to two weeks and you are eating every meal out, have nowhere to store medication properly, and cannot cook the simple food a recovering patient can actually keep down.

A short-term apartment or serviced flat solves most of that. You get a kitchen, a fridge for medicines that need cooling, a washing machine, and enough room that a spouse, a parent, and a child are not all sharing one hotel bed. For families splitting shifts at the hospital, having a real base nearby changes the whole experience. Our comparison of short-term rental vs hotel covers this trade-off in more detail.

Stay close, but check what "close" means

Dhaka traffic can turn a three-kilometre trip into a forty-minute crawl. When you are booking, distance on a map matters less than travel time at the hours you will actually be moving, which for hospital visits often means morning and evening rush.

Most of the big private hospitals sit in a few known clusters. Square Hospital and Labaid are in the Dhanmondi and Panthapath area. Evercare (formerly Apollo) is out in Bashundhara. United Hospital is in Gulshan. If your treatment is at one of these, prioritise a stay in that immediate neighbourhood rather than something cheaper across the city that looks close on paper. For a fuller picture of each area, see our guide to the best areas to stay in Dhaka.

A quick checklist before you book

  • Real travel time to the hospital during the hours you will commute, not just the distance
  • A working kitchen if the stay is longer than a few nights
  • Lift access if the patient cannot manage stairs
  • A quiet floor or building so a recovering patient can actually rest
  • Flexible check-out, because treatment timelines change and you may need to extend
  • A pharmacy and simple food nearby, so a late-night medicine run is not a crisis

Budgeting for a stay that might run long

The mistake people make is budgeting for the planned length of treatment. Treatment slips. A procedure gets pushed, recovery takes longer than the doctor said, a follow-up appointment lands three days after discharge and it makes no sense to travel home and come back.

Two things help. First, look for places that offer weekly or monthly rates, which are usually far cheaper per night than the nightly price. Second, ask about extension before you book, not after. Knowing you can stay a few extra days without scrambling for a new place is worth a lot when you are already stretched thin. Our budget travel in Bangladesh guide has more ways to keep a longer stay affordable.

Bringing family, and the shifts nobody talks about

In most Bangladeshi families, a patient does not come alone. There is someone at the bedside during the day, someone handling food and errands, and often children or elderly parents who could not be left behind. A place with two bedrooms and a common space lets people rotate rest and hospital duty instead of everyone running on no sleep.

If you are the one organising all of this, give yourself permission to book something that fits the whole group properly. A cramped stay makes a hard week harder.

Finding the right place

Travela lists short-term stays across Dhaka, including apartments in the neighbourhoods around the major hospitals. You can filter by area, see what each place offers, and book for the nights you need with the option to extend if treatment runs longer. For a medical stay, that flexibility usually matters more than saving a few hundred taka a night.

Whatever you book, sort out the accommodation early. It is one of the few parts of a medical trip you can settle in advance, and having it handled frees you to focus on the part that actually matters.
