Cox's Bazar has the longest natural sea beach in the world, but if all you do is stand on the main beach at Kolatoli and take a few photos, you are missing most of what makes the trip worth it. This guide covers where to go, when to go, and how to actually enjoy the place instead of fighting crowds and overpaying for everything.

When to go

The stretch from November to February is the sweet spot. The weather is cool, the sea is calm, and the whole town is set up for visitors. The downside is that everyone else knows this too, so prices climb and the popular beaches get busy, especially around the December holidays and any long weekend.

If you want fewer people and lower room rates, aim for the shoulder months just before or after peak season. Avoid the monsoon from June to September unless you genuinely like grey skies and rough water. The rain can wash out a whole trip. If keeping costs down is the priority, our guide to budget travel in Bangladesh goes deeper on timing your trip for lower prices.

The beaches, ranked by what you want

Cox's Bazar is not one beach, it is a long coastline with very different moods along it.

Kolatoli and Laboni

These are the main tourist points, closest to the hotels and restaurants. Easy to reach, plenty going on, and packed during peak season. Good if you want the lively, everyone-is-here atmosphere. Not great if you came for quiet.

Himchari

A short drive south, where the hills meet the sea. There is a waterfall that is impressive after rain and mostly a trickle in dry season, so set your expectations by the calendar. The drive itself, with the hills on one side and the ocean on the other, is half the reason to go.

Inani and Patuartek

Further south, quieter, and known for the coral-like rocks scattered along the shore. This is where you go when the main beach feels like too much. The water is cleaner and the crowds thin out the further you get from town.

Day trips worth the effort

Two side trips can turn a decent Cox's Bazar visit into a great one.

Maheshkhali is an island a short boat ride away, with a hilltop temple, betel leaf farms, and a slower pace than the mainland. It makes an easy half-day.

Saint Martin's is the bigger commitment. It is Bangladesh's only coral island, several hours out by ship, and worth an overnight stay rather than a rushed day trip. Note that access is regulated and rules change season to season, so check the current situation before you plan around it.

If the hills appeal to you more than the coast, the Sajek Valley trip guide and the Sylhet travel guide cover two very different green escapes worth pairing with a beach trip.

Food you should actually eat

You are on the coast, so eat from the coast. Fresh grilled fish, prawns, and the local catch are the point. The row of fish grills near the beach lets you pick what you want and have it cooked in front of you. Rupchanda and coral fish are safe bets.

One practical tip: agree on the price before anything hits the grill. Rates for the same fish can swing a lot depending on the season and how touristy you look, so ask first and you avoid a nasty surprise on the bill.

Where to stay

Hotel prices in Cox's Bazar swing hard between peak and off-season, and the same room can cost very different amounts depending on when you book. For a family or a group, a short-term apartment or serviced flat often works out better than a hotel room. You get more space, a kitchen if you want to cook, and usually a better rate for longer stays. If you are weighing the two, our breakdown of short-term rental vs hotel lays out when each one makes sense.

Booking ahead matters more than people expect, particularly for any trip over a holiday or long weekend, when the good places fill up fast and what is left gets expensive.

Travela lists stays across Cox's Bazar, from beachfront rooms to full apartments a little back from the water. You can compare what each place offers and book for the exact dates you need. Sort out the stay early, and the rest of the trip gets a lot easier.
